President's Welcome

Founded in 1909 by a multiracial group of progressive thinkers, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is a non-profit, membership organization established with the objective of ensuring equality of minority groups. We are delighted to present our updated site to our membership and followers throughout the community.

Our Evanston/North Shore NAACP branch was established in 1917, took several years off and became re-established by 1930. Much like our national NAACP, our branch has consistently strived to be an advocate for civil and human rights for African Americans and people of color. Our membership meetings are held once a month on third Tuesdays in our third floor office at 2010 Dewey Avenue.

As part of the oldest civil rights organization in the world, the Evanston/North Shore branch is dedicated towards the engagement of equality and justice in education, law enforcement, health care, housing, economic empowerment, youth programming, clean energy, and labor rights. We are fully resolved and dedicated in accomplishing our primary mission, to remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes. In Evanston we have;
  • Served as advocates for eliminating the academic achievement gap in District 65,
  • Developed a relationship with the Evanston Police Department and adopted a 10 Shared Principles Program to improve Black Community and Police Department relations,
  • Worked for an equitable and fair City Budget for 2019,
  • Supported existing Black Businesses and Entrepreneurs,
  • Increased our membership attendance through an NAACP Sunday for houses of worship,
  • Recruited young people and children to join the NAACP,
  • Hosted community meetings for candidates, elected officials and community leaders, and,
  • Responded to numerous grievances issued by community residents

If you are a resident of Evanston or any of our north shore communities near Evanston, we encourage you to join our Evanston/North Shore Branch. More than ever, we must strive to work together with renewed determination to end racism, demand equality and engage in the
struggle for justice on behalf of all oppressed people.

Peace and Power,
